Hull Rupture Ships: Izumo and the Three Hulls

What we know about Hull Rupture's three ships, including Izumo's low-mass playstyle, the unnamed speed hull, and how ship choice changes a run.

Last Updated: 2026-10-30

Hull Rupture launches with three ships, each built for a different approach to the same 20-wave campaign. Only one of them, Izumo, has been playable in the demo. The other two are announced but not detailed, which makes any "best ship" claim premature.

What is clear is that the ship is not a cosmetic choice. Its starting layout, mass, engine capacity, and module slots shape the entire run. A ship built for speed visits more galaxy nodes; a heavier ship carries more production but fights more waves on the road.

"New ship configurations can also be unlocked through milestones and challenges, opening up different approaches to future runs."

For the build that fits a ship, use the tier list; for the ruleset, read game modes.

Izumo is the only playable ship so far

The other two ships are confirmed but unnamed. Do not plan a build around a ship you cannot select in the demo.

The three ships at a glance

Ship Status Known identity Best for
Izumo Playable in demo Small, maneuverable, scavenged hull Learning the economy; flexible runs
Unnamed low-mass ship Announced Speed and many galaxy destinations Event-heavy, route-focused runs
Unnamed third ship Announced Not detailed Unknown; likely a heavier or defense-focused hull

The store page confirms three ships and six modes. The demo confirms Izumo. Everything else is inference from developer statements, and should be treated as such.

Izumo: the scavenged starter

Izumo's in-game description is one of the best pieces of writing in the demo: a small, maneuverable ship made from random stuff Despot found lying around after Earth was destroyed. It is not a purpose-built warship. It is a survival machine held together by spite and salvage.

That identity shows up in the mechanics:

  • Small starting hull. Fewer module slots, shorter repair paths, lower mass.
  • Maneuverable. Good for players who want to move between nodes rather than turtle.
  • Scavenged layout. The starting rooms are not a clean production block; you have to reshape them.

Izumo rewards compact production and punishes overbuilding. Its short repair path is an advantage, but its limited slots mean every module competes for space. A player who builds wide on Izumo ends up with a slow ship and a thin defense.

The demo's Izumo is also the only ship with a known starting loadout. The full game may change it; the ship-select screen in the demo shows additional stat lines that are not explained in the store copy.

The low-mass ship

Konfa has said that one of the three ships supports a low-mass, high-speed playstyle with many galaxy destinations. That is the most interesting design space in the game.

Travel speed depends on engines and total mass. A ship that stays light can:

  • visit more event nodes per run
  • reach Black Markets and shipyards before the wave timer punishes the detour
  • take more modifiers, which are the run's build-defining rewards

The tradeoff is carrying capacity. A light ship has fewer modules, which means less production per wave and a thinner defense. It compensates with route efficiency: more nodes, more events, more chances at a build-around modifier.

This is the ship to watch if you like the galaxy map more than the tower defense. It is not confirmed to be stronger; it is confirmed to be different.

The third ship

The third ship has no public identity. The store page says three ships, the demo shows one, and the developers have described the roster as covering different playstyles.

Do not trust a guide that names it or ranks it. There is no official name, no screenshot, and no stat block. The only safe expectation is that it fills a niche the other two do not: likely a heavier hull with more slots, more armor, or a defensive system that Izumo lacks.

If you are planning a first run, ignore the third ship. It cannot be tested before launch, and the demo's Izumo is the only ship with known behavior.

How ship choice changes a run

A ship is a set of constraints, not a class. The same modules and turrets behave differently depending on the hull.

Ship trait Effect on the run
Starting slots How fast production comes online
Mass Travel speed and fuel burn
Engine capacity How many destinations you can reach
Repair paths How quickly a breach is fixed
Starting systems Which build is viable before the first shop

A ship with many starting slots can afford a slow economy. A ship with few slots needs a fast, compact production block. A heavy ship can carry more turrets but pays for it on the map. A light ship can dodge waves but cannot afford a long fight.

The ship-select screen is therefore the first strategic decision of the run, not a difficulty setting. Pick the ship whose weakness you can manage.

Will there be more ships after launch?

Konfa has mentioned ship configurations unlocked through milestones and challenges. That could mean additional hulls, alternate layouts, or cosmetic variants. The store page promises three ships at launch, so treat three as the release roster.

If post-launch ships arrive, they will likely be announced in the Steam news feed. There is no season pass or DLC roadmap at the time of writing.

Which ship should you start with?

If you are new, Izumo. It is the only ship with a demo, the smallest learning curve, and the most forgiving repair path.

If you already know the economy and want to explore the galaxy map, the low-mass ship is the more interesting choice. It trades production for mobility, which is a different game rather than a harder one.

If you want a defensive fortress, wait for the third ship's reveal. Izumo is not built for a turret-heavy turtle, and the low-mass ship is the opposite of that.

FAQ

How many ships are in Hull Rupture? Three at launch. Only Izumo has been playable in the demo.

What is the best ship? Unknown. Izumo is the best-tested, and the low-mass ship is the most promising for galaxy-heavy runs. The third ship has no public details.

Can I unlock more ships? Konfa has mentioned configurations unlocked through milestones and challenges. The launch roster is three.

Do ships change the win condition? The campaign goal is the same, but starting layout, mass, and systems change how you reach it. No ship-specific ending has been announced.

Is Izumo the weakest ship? It is the smallest and the most constrained. "Weakest" depends on the player; Izumo's low mass and short repair paths are real advantages.
